Former Officer Added to Wall

Former West Columbia Police Officer William “Bill” Schuck was added to the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. in May of 2011.  Bill, who served with West Columbia from 2007 until 2009, left the Department to move to the upstate where his wife, Carrie Ann, had found a job in her career field.  Bill was hired by the Oconee County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy.

While on patrol in a rural section of Oconee County on February 7, 2010, Bill’s car became stuck on a muddy logging road.  As Bill tried to free the vehicle, it slid forward pinning Bill between the patrol vehicle and a tree.  Bill died at the scene and was found by one of his co-workers.

Bill was 26 at the time of his death.  His wife, Carrie Ann, was expecting their first child.  Aaron was born in the summer.

Bill was added to the S.C. Law Enforcement Hall of Fame during a ceremony in May of this year.  He also was added to the Law Enforcement Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.  Victims’ Assistance Officer Colleen Belk served as Carrie Ann’s escort during the National Memorial Ceremony.  Officer Belk stated that the experience is something she will never forget and that she was honored to serve in this way for her friend.
